Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
